As we covered previously, a MEWP must never be operated on a slope, grade, ramp, or uneven surface that exceeds what the MEWP is rated for by the manufacturer. Doing so could be catastrophic and result in a tip over.
If your trainee will be operating on any type of slope during the evaluation, they should review the operator’s manual to confirm the capabilities and limitations of the particular MEWP during the planning process.
As an evaluator, you should also be aware of the MEWPs capabilities regarding slopes as well as the grades of all slopes that your trainee will be operating on. This will be important for safety as well as help to evaluate the knowledge and performance of your trainee.
Throughout the evaluation, before the operator accesses a slope, simply ask them what the limitations are of the MEWP and if it’s safe to access the slope they’re proceeding to. This is an easy way to confirm they’re familiar with the limitations.
DO NOT let them drive on any slopes that exceed the equipment’s capabilities and limitations. This could result in a tip-over event.
If an operator does not perform to a satisfactory level in this area, you should pause the evaluation and clarify the requirements and expectations of operating on slopes.
